Hair Bow Display Tutorial

I love do-it-yourself projects, rolling up my sleeves, and getting creative. I could spend hours lost in Joann’s, half-crazed with inspiration and ambition. But with little ones at home, it feels like I just don’t have time to get elbow-deep into anything too lengthy or involved. So here’s another tutorial for a quick, sweet and simple DIY project to tickle your creative fancy, without taking up your whole afternoon. Custom create a beautiful hair bow display that will match your daughter’s room and keep all her bows neat and tidy in one spot.

One of the things I love about do-it-yourself projects is that you can make them to match you. Match it to any color or decor theme, match it to your daughter’s personality, make it extra frilly or spicy and spunky. I’ve actually seen hair bow displays similar to this one for sale here or there. But I tend to be a bit picky. And out of all the displays I saw, they were never quite what I was looking for. So off to Joann’s I went to gather supplies and get started. Keep scrolling to find my supply list.

This hair bow display also makes a sweet gift for a friend – for a baby shower, a birthday, Valentine’s Day or Christmas.

Project Time: 5-10 minutes

Hair Bow Display Supplies:

  • Silk flower
  • 1 yard of 1 1/2″ ribbon
  • 1 yard of 7/8″ ribbon
  • 1-1 1/2″ decorative button
  • Fabric scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Fray Check

Hair Bow Display Assembly:

1. First, gather all supplies. Disconnect a silk flower from its stem. It should come apart fairly easily with a firm pull.
2. Separate silk flower petals from one another.
3. Arrange petals and button how you want them before beginning with gluing. I don’t necessarily include all petals from the original silk flower in the end product.
4. Once you’ve decided how you want it to look, use a hot glue gun to glue the individual layers together.
5. Glue button to flower.
6. Measure and cut ribbon to desired length. I cut mine to 1 yard.
7. Decoratively trim bottom ends of ribbons.
8. Cut about a 2″ length of 3/8″ width ribbon to create a hanger for the bow display.
9. Next, glue the ends of the 2″ ribbon together to create hanger.
10. Align bottom ends of two ribbons. There may be a slight excess of one ribbon at the top end; trim the excess so the top ends align evenly.
11. Glue the top ends of the ribbons together.
12. Then glue top ends of ribbons to the back of the flower, with the hanger sandwiched between the two layers.
Here’s a view from the front, with all pieces and layers assembled.
13. Last, use Fray Check at the ends to prevent the ribbon from unraveling.
And here’s the end product! Hang it up on a wall and start clipping your bows up there.
